Sustainable sustenance

UPDATE 2020: This location has closed.

Cafe Retail store Newtree is a Belgian chocolate company devoted to operating their business according to environmentally responsible and sustainable principles. Oh, and making delicious chocolate.

Newtree has 2 chocolate cafés in downtown SF.  The one on Ecker Place is a demonstration of their sustainable business philosophy incorporating green, sustainable building materials like recycled glass, concrete and bamboo, and compostable to-go containers and utensils. It’s also very comfortable and pretty quiet for a downtown location: It’s in an alley off Market St. The other location is at 311 California St (also closed).

The café’s menu has both sweet and savory items that incorporate chocolate. Maybe the most interesting is the raw brussels sprouts salad with a dressing that includes chocolate.

The café also carries their whole line of chocolates with free samples.

CBTB Tip:

If you’re looking for a cup of hot chocolate, get there early. They only make one batch a day, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
