The toffee comes in large thin irregularly-shaped squares, lightly dusted with caramelized almond bits, that are encased in cellophane sleeves, which keeps the mess down when you break the toffee into bite-sized pieces. There are 2 squares in each box.<\/p>\n<h2>Pretty as a picture<\/h2>\n<p>The packaging makes it a pretty gift: a 5&#8243;-square Tiffany-blue box decorated with L\u2019Armourette\u2019s Art Nouveau-esque logo and graphics. And the toffee itself has an obvious hand-of-the-maker visual appeal.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say the taste is what you would expect of a straight-up toffee, with one exception: It\u2019s made with is a very nice, non-bitter dark chocolate (as I would expect from L\u2019Amourette).<\/p>\n<p>If you or someone you love fears bitter chocolate, this toffee could be your gateway to the dark side. The caramelized base is crunchy and sweet, becoming chewy toward the end, and melds nicely with the smooth, dark chocolate. Almond bits are scattered throughout the candy base and across the top, but they are not a top flavor note. It\u2019s really about the caramel &amp; dark chocolate combo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8090\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8090\" src=\"https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/toffeex2.jpg\" alt=\"toffee pieces\" width=\"630\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/toffeex2.jpg 630w, https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/toffeex2-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/toffeex2-348x196.jpg 348w, https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/toffeex2-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside the gift box are 2 generously sized (over 4&#8243; square) toffee slabs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I found L\u2019Amourette English Toffee at Sacred Wheel Cheese Shop, an Oakland merchant who sells much more than cheese (and serves a great, inexpensive lunch).
