Here\u2019s my evidence that we need more watchable chocolate:<\/p>\n<h2>Movies with chocolate in them<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Frozen\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2294629\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frozen<\/a>,<\/strong> 2013. Animated retelling of the Snow Queen fairy tale in which 2 estranged sisters briefly bond over their mutual love of chocolate before a big misunderstanding separates them again and a bunch of other stuff happens. A French-Belgian (good chocolate cred) romantic comedy about 2 painfully shy chocolatiers falling in love and saving a chocolate factory. People in this movie are exceptionally good at describing the experience of eating chocolate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Kings of Pastry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1558972\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kings of Pastry<\/a>,<\/strong> 2009. A D.A. Pennebaker documentary about the legendary <em>Meilleur Ouvrier de France<\/em> (Best Craftsman in France) competition that includes chocolate sculpture and desserts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"In Search of the Heart of Chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Search-The-Heart-Chocolate-chocumentary\/dp\/B00DRCGZ4S\/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In Search of the Heart of Chocolate<\/a>,<\/strong> 2008. Documentary by Sarah Feinbloom, with local SFBA interviews and highlighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chocolatecoveredsf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chocolate Covered<\/a>, the great chocolate resource on 24th St. in SF.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Merci pur le Chocolat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0232083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Merci pour le Chocolat<\/a>,<\/strong> 2000. French mystery involving a chocolate heiress who controls the bedtime hot chocolate ceremony in her creepy mansion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Chocolat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0241303\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chocolat<\/a>, <\/strong>2000. Juliette Binoche is a chocolatier who disrupts\u00a0 a small conservative French town with a great chocolate lifestyle, and Johnny Depp is a free-spirited drifter who adds to the disruption. Lots of beautiful chocolate-centric scenes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Forrest Gump\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0109830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forrest Gump<\/a>,<\/strong> 1994. Probably the most famous quote about chocolate appears in this movie about an accidentally influential man, who first utters the quote with his mouth full of chocolate.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"The Chocolate War\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0094869\/?ref_=ttpl_pl_tt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Chocolate War<\/a>,<\/strong> 1988. Based on the book of the same name, drama about the hazing of a new student at a private school, which includes selling or refusing to sell chocolates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Consuming Passions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0094907\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consuming Passions<\/a>,<\/strong> 1988. Dated black comedy by a couple of Monty Python alumni about a deadly mishap at a chocolate factory resulting in candies for the cannibal in all of us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Willie Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0067992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willy Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory<\/a>, <\/strong>1971, and <strong><a title=\"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0367594\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie &amp; the Chocolate Factory<\/a>,<\/strong> 2005. Same story about a boy who wins the golden ticket to a magic chocolate factory, although Johnny Depp&#8217;s version of Willy Wonka is pretty creepy. And Oompa-Loompas are just unsettling no matter when filmed. But a chocolate river with a waterfall (choco-fall?) \u2014 woo hoo!<\/p>\n<h2>TV episodes with chocolate in them<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2577\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a title=\"Lucy and Ethel on the candy line\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0609243\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2577\" title=\"Lucy and Ethel on the candy line\" src=\"https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/LucyEthelChocos.png\" alt=\"Lucy and Ethel on the candy line\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/LucyEthelChocos.png 320w, https:\/\/chocolatebythebay.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/LucyEthelChocos-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 85vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Who can forget this classic \u201cI Love Lucy\u201d routine?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Lucy and Ethel on the candy line\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0609243\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Job Switching<\/a>,<\/strong> (\u201cI Love Lucy\u201d episode) 1952. The classic comedy routine of Lucy and Ethel on the candy wrapping line is easy to find online.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Theft of the Royal Ruby\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0676187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Theft of the Royal Ruby<\/a>,<\/strong> (an Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot mystery) 1991. In the beginning of this story, Poiret (David Suchet) buys handmade chocolates from a London chocolate shop. Then must deal with the constant interruptions of a jewelry theft case that thwarts his attempts to enjoy his Christmas treats.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Chocolate Box\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0676169\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Chocolate Box<\/a>,<\/strong> (an Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot mystery) 1993. On a trip to Belgium (beautiful railway station and other lovely scenic shots), Poiret (David Suchet) reminisces about a case that &#8220;wasn&#8217;t solved&#8221; involving a box of poisoned chocolates. The chocolates come from the maitre chocolatier St. Alard (a friend of the family).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0477524\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>My Lovely Sam Soon<\/strong><\/a> (AKA: My Name is Kim Sam-soon), 2005. Korean rom-com about a French-trained Korean pastry chef falling in love with her boss. 16 episodes with a lot of chocolate involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"The Blue Geranium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1587691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Blue Geranium<\/a>,<\/strong> (an Agatha Christie Miss Marple mystery) 2010. Chocolate gets a bad rap in this one as a metaphor for the deadly sin of gluttony, but they make a pretty weak case as the character eating chocolates turns down the first box offered, insisting on truffles only. Seems pride would be the closer of the seven deadly sins here.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Dark Chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1736165\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dark Chocolate<\/a>,<\/strong> (BBC \u201cNew Tricks\u201d episode) 2010. Retired cops investigate a serial rapist whose first victims worked in a chocolate factory. The title is a bit misleading since it\u2019s a British cop show, so the chocolate depicted is milk chocolate bars on factory tables. The only mention of dark chocolate comes when the old guys hassle their younger \u2018guv,\u2019 saying she probably likes to eat that boutique-y, 70% fair-trade \u201cblack tar.\u201d As one of them says, \u201cI want a chocolate that tastes like sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Three Act Tragedy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1469899\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Three Act Tragedy<\/a>,<\/strong> (an Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot mystery) 2011. In addition to a couple of men killed by poisoned drinks, a woman is killed by nicotine-laced chocolates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Crime Scene Cleaner, season 1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00RC16T7S\/ref=nosim\/giallicommysters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Matter of Taste<\/a>,<\/strong> ( \u201cCrime Scene Cleaner,\u201d German comedy series, episode) 2011. Schotty the cleaner meets an overweight woman mourning her deceased psychologist who makes chocolates to impress men.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Death of a Travelling Salesman\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2622946\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Death of a Travelling Salesman<\/a>,<\/strong> (\u201cThe Doctor Blake Mysteries\u201d episode) 2013. A cop uses a brush with death to trick a woman he likes into feeding him chocolates while the doctor and the rest of the police investigate the death of a vacuum cleaner salesman via snake venom.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Death in Paradise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3465506\/?ref_=tt_ep_ep2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wrong Man<\/a>,<\/strong> (BBC \u201cDeath in Paradise\u2019 episode) 2014. An actress on a zombie movie set dies after eating the only poisoned chocolate in a box of chocolates.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mr. Selfridge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3110354\/?ref_=tt_ep_ep4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mr. Selfridge<\/strong>, season 2, episode 4<\/a>, 2014. While the store staff prepares for war, Mrs. Selfridge and her friends host a benefit at the store that includes a chocolate rose\u00a0making demonstration, a chocolate sculpture auction, and Belgian chocolate bonbon tastings in exchange for funds to help\u00a0Belgian refugees.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Don Matteo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x19vpjn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chocolate<\/a><\/strong> (\u201cDon Matteo\u201d episode), 2014. A pastry chef working at a chocolatiere is murdered. In Italian.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Choco_Bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Choco Bank<\/a><\/strong>, 2016. 6 episodes. Stereotypical, tho\u2019 short, K-drama about a young chocolatier and a banker working together to find love and a successful business. Lots of chocolate, but little chemistry between the leads, one of whom is popular K-pop idol <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kai_(entertainer,_born_1994)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kai from EXO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Chocolate in title only<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Bread and Chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0070506\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bread &amp; Chocolate<\/a>, <\/strong>1974. Nino Manfredi is an Italian guest worker in Switzerland enduring the trials of Job in a Chaplinesque way. In Italian. I\u2019m not sure if there are any actual chocolate-centered scenes, it\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve seen this.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Like water for chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0103994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Like Water for Chocolate<\/a>, <\/strong>1992. Mean mom stands in the way of true love, but food is the ultimate conduit between two lovers who aren\u2019t allowed to be in the same room together. Anybody remember any chocolate in here? In Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1183252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chocolate<\/a>,<\/strong> 2008. Soooo boring action movie about an autistic super fighter. I admit I didn\u2019t watch it all the way through to see if there was any actual chocolate in it. In Thai.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0454431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chocolate: Deep, Dark Secrets<\/a>,<\/strong> 2005. Bollywood version of \u201cThe Usual Suspects.\u201d Haven\u2019t seen it myself, but as I understand it, no actual chocolate was involved in this story.
